Christmas Under the Clock

Christmas Under the Clock was a series of events in the run-up to Christmas 2015. The idea was to animate the area on O'Connell Street around Clery's and the GPO in the run up to Christmas.

We worked with Iseult Byrne and the Events Unit in Dublin City Council programme activity to run Thursday to Sunday for two weeks running as well as a flagship event on each of the Sundays that saw aerial group Fidget Feet perform multiple shows above the crowds on O'Connell Street as well as on the columns of the GPO.

It was extremely challenging and extremely rewarding. It involved a large number of our Team working seamlessly with various suppliers & stakeholders.

The Challenge

Aerial performances & more on O'Connell St, Dublin

Our Solution

We researched multiple options with regard to locating the crane, performers, generators, event elements, performers' area etc. until we found a solution that worked for all relevant stakeholders.

The Result

We ran 8 days of activity on O'Connell Street that did what it needed to do. It animated a space that was otherwise under-utilised due to recent retail store closures.

It helped restore some of the magic of Christmas to Dublin's main city by providing a wide range of free, family-fun activities that shoppers could dip in and out of and enjoy at their leisure.

The weight loading for the crane was a key element, which impacted significantly on everything else. No crane, no performance, so we had to make it work.

What we did

We planned and managed the programme of events in its entirety. We worked with Iseult & DCC in order to finalise the content for the programme and we then ensured it was all run as per plan, safely and successfully.

We did multiple site visits, multiple EMP drafts, custom capacity calculations, a variety of meetings & consultations with key stakeholders including local businesses, An Garda Siochana and various departments within DCC.

We provided:

  • Capacity calculations
  • Quick turnaround
  • Stakeholder management
  • Event Controller & Deputy
  • Safety Officer & Deputy
  • Production Manager
  • 4 x Safety Management Staff
  • Event Management Staff

What we did

We planned and managed the activity, along with the Cultural Producer, on behalf of Dublin City Council. We had Team members on the ground at all times, ensuring all was working as designed.

The ambitious programming included aerial performances on the 6 flutic ionic columns at the front of the GPO. This involved some significant planning and stakeholder engagement. As did the aerial performance out over O'Connell Street, considering a road closure was not an option. Given it was the run-up to Christmas, an application for a road closure there could not have been granted.

We successfully planned & managed multiple aerial performances above moving traffic, while ensuring the gathered crowds were still getting a proper spectacle.
