MiSK Art Festival, Saudi Arabia

The MiSK Art Festival in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia spans 4 days and involves seminars, discussions, exhibitions, installations and a whole lot more across a wide range of art forms. Run by the MiSK Foundation, whose aim it is to cultivate learning and leadership for the Saudi Arabia of tomorrow, upwards of 60,000 people visited the outdoor venue across the course of the Festival.

This was our first event with this client in Saudi Arabia. They sought us out to consult specifically on crowds and their movement so as to ensure their programming and site design etc. was optimised so as to create the safest and most enjoyable experience for their audience.

Some of the installations and artistry on show was phenomenal. Live art pieces were created in a wide variety of forms and the attendees were truly able to immerse themselves in the art of their choice.

Our main deliverables, as well as being general Safety Advisors for the client, included:

  • Custom capacity calculations for the overall outdoor site as well as multiple structures within.
  • Development and implementation of a large-scale Transport Management Plan, incorporating parking for 4,000 cars, shuttle buses, designated private drop-off / pick-up points (a significant challenge in Saudi), right-of-way systems design and more.
  • Staff Training in the implementation of the Transport Management System.
  • Risk Assessment of the entire site and event.

The Staff Training element was key to the success of this project, as only 3 of our Team were travelling out. As such, we were relying on a local team to implement the Transport Management System, with us overseeing and troubleshooting during the 4 days.

We really enjoyed this event and all its challenges.

The Challenge

Planning for the safe, enjoyable experience of approximately 15,000 people each day in Saudi saw us designing & implementing a full Transport Management Plan as well as a lot of capacity calculations.

Our Solution

We worked closely with our international client to review and re-design, as required, an elaborate event site located in a non-event venue. The cultural intricacies and religious imperatives had to be assimilated into the planning & design also.

The Result

Over 60,000 people enjoyed this Festival across 4 days of well-programmed and engaging content. We integrated very well with our client and their local team to bring our Crowd & Event Safety experience to bear, complementing the programme.

What we did

We engaged effectively & efficiently with our client through email and Skype in the early stages of this project. We arranged and completed a site visit as early as possible in order to inform our planning.

We understood that, while our model and approach can work on all events, wherever they take place, it's important to understand and account for geographical and cultural influences.

We provided:

  • Risk Assessments
  • Crowd Consultancy
  • Safe Capacity Calculations
  • Event Management Planning
  • Site Design Consultancy
  • Traffic Management Planning
  • Event Safety Advisors
  • Staff Training

What we did

We were on hand during the entire event to advise and adapt plans as necessary. We engaged with all key stakeholders on a continuous basis, developing an environment of trust and collaboration that served us, the client, and ultimately the attendees well.

Operating in Saudi, much like any international territory with a different culture, has its challenges. Addressing those and adapting how we do what we do so that the event would be the success we knew it could be was an enjoyable experience.

This was the first of what looks to be a number of engagements with this client in Saudi and, it's fair to say, things started well.
